Volunteer to Create Book Bags!

To support distance learning efforts, Books Are Wings created the Book Bag Project in order to serve the entire state while schools are not able to support in-person programming. The Book Bag Project is a new way to ensure that all children in Rhode Island have access to books. Everything is packed and sealed for 72 hours before they get to families and schools. Students safely receive these materials with other distance learning supplies through contactless pickup through their schools.

We can’t do this work without the support of our community. We are looking for volunteers to support this project!

In September, we called for volunteers to pack book bags for distribution. Over 15 volunteers packed more than 5,000 books that are being distributed to children in our literacy partnership programs. We need this help again!

Volunteers will be asked to pick up 4-8 boxes of loose books, bags and labels on Wednesday, October 28th. You will receive books from one age range, put 2 books per bag and label them. All pick up will be outdoors and socially distanced to ensure the safety of volunteers. You can expect to spend an hour or two packing up the bags at home.

The following day, on October 29th at 5:30, volunteers will receive the link to a Zoom where you will learn more about Books Are Wings and the students who are receiving the books.

We usually send 600 plus books to each elementary school that we partner with, so we are looking for 7-10 people to volunteer to pack book bags. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Kim Nelson, Director of Community Engagement at kim@booksarewings.org.
