August 6, 2018  |  By Jocelynn White In Summer

Summer 2018

Children who receive and read free books over the summer experience the equivalent of attending three years of summer school—and the difference in fall reading scores is twice as high among the poorest children in the study (Allington & McGill-Franzen, 2008).
HSLI Summer Programs
Summer camp programs with our partners at HSLI. began a few weeks ago with our Summer Staff Lead Jerome. We are reading Growing Up Pedro by Matt Tavares and painting rocks to compliment the idea that he began his career throwing rocks at mangos on the trees in the Dominican. Thank you to United Way of Rhode Island for supporting our work in this critical summer porgrams.
BAW programs will run until the second week of August let us know if you are interested in joining.

Central Falls Parks & Rec
With the wonderful support of Marti our long time volunteer, Collette and the RI Foundation, we have been successfully running a weekly program at Jenks Park. Marti has been there every week reading to children and supporting camp counselors in their efforts to to encourage summer reading.
Stay tuned for more updates on this program and the exciting things that will be happening next in Central Falls parks!

Take a Book
It is with great excitement that we kicked off to our partnership work with the state. On June, 27, 2018 we kicked off our first site at the DHS office in Pawtucket. We then opened DHS Providence the second week in July. We will be opening two other locations at the DMV in Cranston and DCYF office in Providence.
Woonsocket Parks & Rec
Stop by World War II Park in Woonsocket to see our first outdoor structure filled with books. We hosted an event on July 16th to kick things off with the Woonsocket Rotary Club!
“The project is going FANTASTIC! Books are going fast. Parents are taking them and reading them in the park. We have regular returns and additions from families. Kids are super excited and take care to pick the ones that are “just right”. Thanks again for choosing Woonsocket Parks and Recreation! This is a great asset to this great location!” – Elizabeth Kerrigan, Director Parks & Recreation , City of Woonsocket

The American bookworm is becoming a rare species.
This may seem crazy to you but nearly a quarter of American adults do not read a book all year- not one! You can nurture the next generation of bookworms by supporting Books Are Wings today. Library
