How It Works

THE PROGRAM
BAW visits partner schools multiple times throughout the school year in this intensive citywide program. The program includes a read aloud and craft activity in every classroom. Working with pre-selected partner schools, each child in a partnership school has the opportunity to receive up to 8 free books throughout the school year.

THE CHALLENGE
Children who fail to read proficiently by third grade are six times more likely to not graduate high school (Annie E. Casey Foundation). In RI, 75% of third graders who receive free and reduced price lunch are reading below grade-level. Approximately 60% of this population has no age appropriate books in their home.

ADDRESSING INEQUITY
Creating platforms and opportunities for children to be exposed to books and reading is key to changing literacy outcomes. The Books All Year program was designed to improve the literacy outcomes of children around the state of Rhode Island.
BAW visits every classroom in roughly 15 strategic partner elementary schools over the course of the school year. The BAW team distributes free books at community events in these schools and provide additional books on the last days of school. This allows the children in these partner schools the opportunity to have 8 personal books in their homes.

Classroom Visits: These school programs with partner schools are all-school, full-day events where every classroom participates in storytelling, literacy activities and every child goes home with two free books.

Community Events: This events reach children and families in their school community environment. These events are hosted in collaboration with school events including parent teacher conferences, family literacy nights, and holiday celebrations. Every family goes home with 1-2 free books.

Summer Recess Week In addition, prior to the end of the school year and aimed at stopping the summer slide, BAW will distribute two free books at existing partner schools to every child during the final weeks of school during school recess blocks. These events allow us to connect families to the summer resources we have available.

Feedback from Partner Schools:

“The BAW events have enriched our students' reading experiences this year, and underscore a message that we are sending to our students about the importance of reading every day. We need as many books as we can get, and Books Are Wings has been a great support for our mission of increasing independent reading for our students. Thank you for all you have done for us.” – Robert F. Bailey Elementary School

“Thank you for being such a great community partner. You have provided our little students with a wonderful variety of books over this past year and we are extremely grateful for your generosity! We look forward to working with you in the future!” Mike Gilmore, Principal: Agnes E. Little Elementary School

“Thank you so much for always keeping us in mind. BAW is always flexible (especially with the weather) making accommodations to ensure the kids have fun and get to read their favorite books." – Ella Risk Elementary
